UK RACKETLON NEWSLETTER

APRIL 2009

The 2009 British Open: New venue, gain world & domestic ranking points, all standards welcome!
Next up is the British Racketlon Open on Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd May 2009. The event is scheduled to start at 0900hrs on Saturday & finish at 1700hrs on Sunday. All classes will complete in one day, so you can come on either day or both, for example if you want to compete in singles one day & doubles on the other day. Anticipated classes are:

Saturday - Mens A, Mens B, Ladies A, Ladies B, Mens over 55's, Mens B Doubles, Mens Doubles (Rookie), Open Under 16's (Rookie).
Sunday - Mens C, Mens D, Mens Singles (Rookie), Mens Over 45's, Mens Under 21's, Open Under 13's (Rookie), Mens A Doubles, Mixed Doubles.

There is a guarantee of three matches & typically games of 21-up, dependent on entry levels. The event takes place at Gosling Sports Park, Welwyn Garden City & the entry deadline is Monday 20th April 2009, although some late entries may be accommodated.

If you have not done so already, you will need to register, by selecting the 'Create an account' link & please make sure you complete the second 'player' part of registration before you attempt to register for the tournament via the 'Tournament Entry' page. When you register for the tournament you will also be required to make payment via paypal. If you are unfamiliar with paypal, watch this useful paypal video. If you have any problems with the registration system, or spot site errors, please report them to  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Entries are steadily building. The Gosling Sports Park venue at Welwyn Garden City, with five courts available for each sport, has the capacity for 100 players on each day. We would therefore like to encourage players to enter both singles & doubles events. All events start & finish on the day, so if you can only make one day, there should be a category for you. Due to the court availability we will also allow players to enter two categories in one day, which will likely mean six matches & a tight playing schedule. For those considering staying over & competing both days, there is an on-site Premier Inn hotel with rooms at £53 for two Adults & two under 15's. With under 16 & under 13 categories, some of you might like to make it a family affair...why not persuade a few club mates too?

The West Midlands Racketlon Open 2009
Event three on the 2009 British tour saw entries at capacity on the Saturday, although there was room for a few more competitors on the Sunday. The extra capacity on the Sunday allowed for some hastily arranged extra matches, with a beefing up of the Mixed Doubles & Under 21 categories. Summary reports & the full results spreadsheet can be found on the 'news' section of the ERA website. If you haven't already done so, please consider registering to this website, especially if you are intending to enter future events.

Photographers, Videographers, Bloggers - Your Sport Needs You!
Racketlon interest is building, but perhaps key to spreading the word is the use of digital media posted onto social networking websites such as YouTube & Facebook. We would like to encourage all to bring their digital equipment to events & capture some of the action & spirit of the tournaments & either post the results to the relevant website or forward your results to  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Civil Service Racketlon Draws Out

Graham Norton, Keith Lesser along with Rakesh Gupta and other tour regulars like Geoff Jordan and Niranjan Shimoga battle in the 2nd annual CSSC Racketlon Championships.

Calum Reid returns

The Czech Open saw the return of dynamic Scot and former world number two Calum Reid, from Scotland. Calum is a well liked character on the tour and it will be good to see the energetic Scot re-emerge and challenge the world's best after taking a break from the sport to travel.

Latest Rankings Out!
The latest UK Rankings, including results from the West Midlands Racketlon Open, are now available to download from the 'Rankings' section of the ERA website. The section also includes a summary of the rankings & links to the world rankings, which have also recently been updated.

Carlisle Racketlon
On Friday 12th June 2009, Chatsworth Tennis Club in Carlisle host a one day tri-racketlon tournament, with tennis club players taking on players from the local squash club at their respective sports plus table tennis. This may be a closed event, but if you are in the area it may be worth enquiring whether they will allow local participation.

Racketlon Awards

With their home event looming, Welwyn Garden City sibling teenagers, James & Danielle West received welcome funding from the Queens Jubilee Awards. They were among 23 talented youngsters receiving awards for their continuous improvement in their chosen sport, theirs being racketlon. This is perhaps the first award of it's kind in support of the growth of racketlon & should help James & Danielle prepare for the upcoming British Open, where they will likely complete in both the main draws & the junior events & receive their first world rankings.

New Tour Dates

Keep checking the ERA website 'events' section for new tour date confirmations. The latest tour date to be added is Sunday 28th June 2009, a one day event in Dulwich. A list of locations being investigated appears on the ERA website. If you are aware of a venue that might suit a racketlon tournament please email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
